There are several locations along the river in Calgary that would make great spots for urban sand beaches. This would provide Calgarians with a place to access the river and gather during the summer months.
Along the Eau Claire River Pathway just to the west of the Peace Bridge and helicoptor pad. This location is high enough to avoid future flooding, but close to the river and in a central location adjacent to downtown and one of Calgary's most visible landmarks. Replace the lawn bounded by the river pathways and replace with sand and fixed umbrellas/seating.
The open field to the northeast of Fort Calgary, inbetween the fort and the new RiverWalk, would also make a good location for a large urban sand beach.
Sand beaches would provide Calgrians with a unique new recreation option in the summer. They would become tourist attractions in themselves and add to Calgary's already high quality of life.
