Hazardous Waste to Clean Hydrogen Fuel using "Photoreforming"

Currently, non-recylable and medical waste in Calgary are disposed off by incineration. In contrast to incineration, photoreforming does not generate greenhouse gases and works at ambient temperature. Along with producing hydrogen fuel, the process can also generate organic feedstocks for the chemical industry. The process works by using nanostructured semiconductors to drive the degradation of waste and pathogens with... more »

3Mt/year Reducton in CO2 Emissions With Airborne Wind Energy Edited

Executive Summary

ENMAX Energy, 100% owned by the City of Calgary, generated 7.64M MWh of electricity for Calgary in 2020 from natural gas, emitting 3M tonnes of CO2 in the process.  This is the City of Calgary's largest source of GHG emissions. Only 8.5% of the electricity generated by ENMAX Energy in 2020 came from renewable sources.

Zen Power is developing a system to generate zero emissions electricity using flying... more »

Ciclo Technologies Inc.

Ciclo Techologies produce clean hydrogen through a self-sufficient cyclic technology at low cost and low-carbon emissions.

What is our proposed idea about?
Chemical Looping Reforming (CCLR) is a new proprietary process capable of producing hydrogen or syngas without external energy or combustion-related carbon emissions. This novel configuration considers a cyclic reduction of the metal oxide to carbide producing... more »

Retrofitting garbage trucks to dual fuel hydrogen-diesel

Retrofitting existing fleets of garbage trucks' internal combustion engines (ICE) to use hydrogen and diesel as fuel. This will bring up to 40% reduction in CO2 emissions. Converting a fleet of 100 trucks to hydrogen dual-fuel deliver about 2600 tonnes less CO2, 40% less NOx, and save about one million liters of diesel per year.

Clean Hydrogen to Reduce Emissions at Shepard Energy Centre

A steam methane reformer hydrogen production facility with carbon capture and storage to supply clean hydrogen (a blend of 5% to 30% with natural gas) for electricity generation at the Shepard Energy Centre. This will reduce CO2 emissions per MWh by up to 10% and sequester 170,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Steam methane reforming (SMR) and carbon capture and storage (CCS) are proven technologies with decades of reliable... more »

Hydrogen and natural gas blend for City facilities and homes Edited

Hi,

I would like to propose a 20% greenhouse gas emission reduction in Calgary by mixing 20% hydrogen gas with natural gas. The existing natural gas supply pipeline network can handle a 20% hydrogen mix therefore this process will not require major infrastructure capital expenses to the city. Hydrogen will increase the heating value of the supplied gas. If this method is implemented citywide then the overall gas house... more »

Calgary Holistic Actions for Renewable Microgrids (CHARM)

Introduction

International team including Calgary inventors, entrepreneurs, investors… wants to demonstrate how to standardize microgrids so that they can all talk to each other and interact. That's an absolutely critical step if microgrids are going to be as important and valuable as we think they can be. We suggest that Calgary could show that microgrids can be implemented cost effectively to provide resilience and... more »

Innovative Energy Solution from the City's Landfill methane Gas Edited

Challenge: Landfill garbage decomposition creates methane gas which is a potent greenhouse gas (GHG). The city's Waste and Recycling Services is expected to expand, install and operate about 40 to 50 landfill gas collection wells, to help reduce the amount of greenhouse gases (GHG) coming from Calgary landfills. The city of Calgary's vertical extraction wells then collect and convert this landfill methane gas to carbon... more »

Small Modular Nuclear Reactor for Electricity, Heat and Hydrogen Edited

Hi,

This idea is to eliminate all greenhouse gas associated with electricity production in Calgary. Small modular nuclear reactors (SMR) are being commercialized in Canada. SMR can be deployed near the city to generate the electricity required by the city. A couple of SMR will be sufficient to meet the Calgary supply demand. Residual SMR heat can be used to emission-free hydrogen utilizing a novel technology (Cu-Cl method)... more »
