Wanted: 1 Million Litres of Water

My name is Jonathan Hammond and I want to save 1 million litres of water.

Water conservation may move more and more into the forefront of the environmental protection spectrum in the coming years and decades. The best way to start saving water is by not wasting it and we can start right in our own homes.

The City of Calgary does an excellent job providing clean, great tasting water to its citizens. It is pumped into... more »

City Policy and Planning Through a Whole Systems Approach

This proposal approaches reducing emissions in Calgary in order to reach its target goals, through environmental policy and city planning using Poland and Dooris' (2010) article as a guide. The guide states that addressing climate change requires the following 6 principles:

• Adopt a 'whole system' approach: i.e., investigate the 'cyclical' nature of implementing policies

o e.g., When citizens choose to walk to work,... more »

Commuter bike lanes to parallel transit/BRT corridors

A healthy and green city. A city that moves. A city of safe and inspiring neighborhoods. Reduced carbon emissions. Healthier people. Reduced traffic congestion. Reduced traffic accidents. These are the objectives of the City of Calgary and its constituents.

These objectives can all be achieved by amending the standard design guidelines and creating a policy to mandate separated, protected commuter bike lanes as part... more »

A Vibrant, Safe Intersection

A Joyous Noise - Dueling Street Pianos!

It can be hard to compete with the noise from the C-Trains, but that shouldn't stop us from trying!
Public pianos on at least two corners of the intersection means that more people could hear the pianos being played over the sound of the trains when they are present, and could create friendly 'dueling piano' interactions and spontaneous events when people are waiting for the next train to come along.

A Vibrant, Safe Intersection

Jumbotron!

Everybody loves seeing and being seen on the big screen at the Saddledome. People are drawn to the lights and the energy of Times Square.
Let's implement a large-scale display visible from all points of the intersection, and rather than advertising, let's display interactive artworks, images of Calgary's history, tweets/texts and things happening on the intersection in the present day.

Riverfront life

Calgary is blessed with 2 beautiful rivers running right through town. However ,unlike most other cities with similar natural assets, there is almost NO opportunity in Calgary to sit in a cafe, bar or restaurant on the waterfront. If you think about some of the great river cities in the world, they all make much better use of their water front for social and commercial purposes. Think about strolling from pub to pub... more »

Urban Beach

There are several locations along the river in Calgary that would make great spots for urban sand beaches. This would provide Calgarians with a place to access the river and gather during the summer months.

Along the Eau Claire River Pathway just to the west of the Peace Bridge and helicoptor pad. This location is high enough to avoid future flooding, but close to the river and in a central location adjacent to downtown... more »

New Plaza at Plus 15 Level to connect New Library and City Hall

Maybe if they ever decide to put a plus 15 between city hall and the new library they could incorporate the idea of an extended green space or plaza or a performance or eating area. The area on the south side of the Municipal Building is in a sunny area above a long driveway to parking underground. People could then easily use the parking at City Hall and go to the Library by using this plaza then an architecturally... more »

Make it Personal - Meet your friends at the polling station

Poll workers are connected to the community in as many ways as possible. This might also mean that we need to reconsiders how we decide where your local poling station is - what are the actual hubs in the community these days? Is it the coffee shop, the mall, the dog park?
