Voter Experience

“How might we improve the voter experience so that the next Municipal election has the highest voter turnout in Calgary’s history?”

Note: This challenge is now complete and the summary documents are available to learn more: Hand off Presentation, Data Analytics, and Scenarios

In the 2013 municipal election, only 39.43% of eligible voters participated in the general election. This is compared to a turnout of 53.39% in the 2010 election. That means 2 out of 3 eligible voters did not cast a ballot. The City has piloted new ways of improving that experience like the Advance Vote Bus, but we are looking for other creative ways to engage more people in the future.

The right to vote - Stop messing in the weeds and think BIG!!!

Pass legislation that guarantees the right to vote at every level of the political process. This would force all kinds of barriers to change.

Votoken - i.e. "Tag, your'e it.. now go vote"

A physical or digital "token" gets passed from one person who votes to the next person that they challenge to vote. Kind of like a chain letter, this would create a positive social pressure to "keep the chain going" and get more people out to vote. Pokemon-Go-Vote

This could take a few different forms. But the core idea is to take advantage of immersive social games tools to encourage people to find poling stations, visit those stations, and generate buzz around visiting them. Games like Pokémon-Go make a profit off using public space for their game-play. Would their developers be willing to help create buzz on election day by positioning better characters, gyms and caches near... more »

Flashmob Tchotchkies and Kudos! Earned media events

Build a network of people who want to descend on various poling stations with treats and little take away/s. No branding. No company recognition. No taking credit. The benefit would be potential buzz and earned media attention on election day. Voting Parties - Not Party Voting

Challenge - we need volunteers to work with the elections office to identify ways to make voting fun & people friendly for people who are new to the process. We want to work with those volunteers to design unique and experimental advertising and tools for that purpose. Mobile Ambassadors - Prevoting Surveys

Could we design a program where mobile ambassadors raise awareness of issues and help stimulate conversation? To keep the conversation as connected as possible we could use a digital tool like a touch or ipad.

Make it Personal - Meet your friends at the polling station

Poll workers are connected to the community in as many ways as possible. This might also mean that we need to reconsiders how we decide where your local poling station is - what are the actual hubs in the community these days? Is it the coffee shop, the mall, the dog park? Mock Polls & Kids Engagement.

For Calgarians who aren't eligible to vote (children, teens, permanent residents etc.) there could be mock poling stations or activities located in the same environment as the regular poling space to allow practice and engagement.

Voting Access for Everyone

A mobile voting bus (like a bookmobile) would make schedules stops at locations like nursing homes or hospitals to allow all people to vote without barriers. People can board the bus or request an election officer bring in the voting iPad so their vote counts. They could also be transit voting buses stationed at major transit terminals to help commuters vote. (This idea is submitted on behalf of the participants of... more »

Yum! Advanced Voting & Food Trucks

Add something delicious to the act of voting. Incorporate a food truck element into an advanced voting bus/truck so that participants get a bit of a perk for casting their ballot.
