Simple public amenities

There are lots of big ideas out there, but when it comes to having a good life in the city, it starts with the little everyday things that make it easier and more comfortable to be out and about in the city. You know what I'm talking about: we desperately need more public bathrooms scattered about Calgary's parks and public spaces, and we need more of them to be open year-round. (More trash and recycling bins would be... more »
What will change for Calgarians if we solve this problem? (Measurable)

Citizens will have more physical comfort and convenience when they go out in Calgary, and the city will be a bit cleaner too.

How could we make it happen with technology or data? (Attainable)

They can be pay toilets if necessary; perhaps with a pre-payment swipe-card system? I would happily pay a dollar every time I need to pee!

BUILDING A HEALTHIER FUTURE OF OPPORTUNITIES

Every year the dream of hundreds of kids get frustrated by not having a chance to follow their passion and become a doctor in the city of Calgary. With limited spaces in the university, students are being discouraged even if they follow all the recommendations (volunteer hours, job related, academic excellence) As the city grows the demand for professional care does too. However, the school of medicine has not grown at... more »
What will change for Calgarians if we solve this problem? (Measurable)

We will be giving youth an opportunity to make their dreams come true and follow their passion. We will generate a bigger work force of locally trained doctors making a huge impact in the society.

How could we make it happen with technology or data? (Attainable)

We need to invest in building a bigger facility to study Medicine in Calgary to be able to offer more spots and opportunities for youth interested in the field. Students should be given any tools needed to ensure that they can continue their path.

Temperature, Wind and Pollution Modelling and Monitoring Grid

Establish a city-wide network of sensors that continuously report wind, temperature, humidity, pressure and pollution (CO2, CO, N2S, O3) levels to a public data archive. Hundreds of these sensors would be installed across all city neighbourhoods and at various heights downtown to create a public, live and historic 24x7x365 super-density 3D model of Calgary's environment and climate.

What will change for Calgarians if we solve this problem? (Measurable)

"The results of collecting environmental data at this resolution will provide an ever-growing dataset that will enable an enormous amount of data-backed analysis and work optimization that simply isn't possible today. For example, climate scientists can build data models of how weather varies across the city. These models will empower both public and private organizations to optimize both public services and private business endeavours.

City workers will be able to efficiently and effectively water city parks where and when its most needed. Winter snow ploughs can be dispatched to where snow is deepest and snow fences can be planned and set up where its snowy and windiest. New public parks, playgrounds and outdoor ice rinks can be placed where wind and weather is most favourable. The wind impact of new highrise buildings can be more accurately modeled and predicted based on real data, thereby minimizing negative impacts on surrounding communities.

Wind doesn't just move in one direction, it is a dynamic fluid that makes responding to airborne threats almost impossible. With the implementation of a high-density, live model of wind movement, emergency services will be able to immediately know where dangerous fumes and smoke is located and moving to when fires and disaster strikes (remember the Hub Oil fire?). Air polluters who use the cover of darkness to avoid detection will no longer be able poison our environment undetected.

Weather forecasters will be able to improve their predictions of weather both in and around the city and city planners will be able to better understand and measure the effect and intensity of heat islands and cold canyons around the variety of proposed urban designs, thereby being able to avoid such outcomes in the future.

The data repository will provide a new and novel resource for commercial application against a wide variety of challenges. This will help to create new economic opportunities for Calgarians, further strengthening and diversifying our economy away from our historical dependence on the oil and gas sector."

How could we make it happen with technology or data? (Attainable)

This suggestion is all about technology and data. I am suggesting the creation of a network of hundreds of sensors to be placed all over the city of Calgary to report on wind, temperature, humidity, barometric pressure and pollution levels of common urban pollutants like CO2, CO, N2S and O3. These sensors would provide a constant stream of live and historic, publicly accessible data for use by both government and private industry in the provision and optimization of public services and private industry invention.

Calgary Smart Energy Grid Netowrk

Calgary when looking to become a smart city needs to look at creating a network that can help us manage city systems and help deliver power and other services to the population. This network would need to be secure and run outside the regular consumer internet network.

What will change for Calgarians if we solve this problem? (Measurable)

The will have a reliable network for future urban technology developments that is secure and that they can rely on.

How could we make it happen with technology or data? (Attainable)

We can make it happen by integrating the network into the electrical grid using internet over power lines. By having this network separated and secure using new technology we can better manage and monitor infrastructure needs. This will require partnerships with new industry and business, but will bring a wealth of new industries and jobs related to the network, but also businesses that are enticed by the convince of an urban smart city network.

Citizen Polling

Develop a polling system, using blockchain technology, to actively poll citizens on hot topics. This idea could be integrated into council meetings and would be split up by ward, giving greater refinement of requirements to communities. By using blockchain technology the votes would be anonymous and transparent, open to all for data analytics.

What will change for Calgarians if we solve this problem? (Measurable)

Active involvement in the community would be the greatest benefit. The measurable will be the amount of participation during voting.

How could we make it happen with technology or data? (Attainable)

By using blockchain technology, or otherwise, we can engage educational partners to help build the platform. This also ensures that the data is transparent and can be analyzed by the public.

Street Parking

No matter the season, street parking can be a major pain, particularly to those who live in apartments or houses on those streets. In February alone, we had two snow route parking bans that resulted in nearly 5,000 parking tickets being issued. The only reason I knew about the ban is that I happened to be listening to the radio. Street parking can also be an issue in the spring when the city is doing street cleaning.... more »
What will change for Calgarians if we solve this problem? (Measurable)

If Calgarians knew about parking bans there would likely be a major decrease in the number of parking tickets being issued. Not to mention a decrease in vehicles being towed in cases such as street cleaning. In addition to knowing when you should and shouldn't be parking on the street, it would be beneficial to know when there are road closures due to marathons or parades.

How could we make it happen with technology or data? (Attainable)

Nearly everyone who owns a car will likely own a smartphone as well. We should invest in applications such as iTagTip, where their goal is to provide each individual personalized information, enabling them to make better decisions based off where they are. In regards to Calgary's street parking challenge, iTagTip could be used to inform the public of parking bans or street closures within their area. For example, people in Marda Loop will want to know of parking bans and road closures within their community, not the parking bans occurring in Sunridge.

What will change for Calgarians if we solve this problem? (Measurable)

"My problem category will now become the benefit for the calgarians...
~ Public & Lay safety: Think about the situation when any unfortunate events happen, when it become dangerous for public as well as law... These drones will be able to do wonders and ensure the safety.
~ City will save cost by using drones instead of helicopters
~ City will get the incident details in matter of minutes
~ Will provide an instant, accurate and better view of incidents, surveillance & monitoring
~ Will help get the bird-eye view instantly with no cost for analyzing development & maintenance of infrastructure
~ Can reach to places where human or other big machines cannot reach
~ Will provide more safety for Calgarians by looking after them all the time
~ Will help in managing Traffic in case of any incidents
~ Can help in searching people/animal/things in case of wide search

The possibilities are endless with an inexpensive and effective system"

How could we make it happen with technology or data? (Attainable)

"To provide a high level plan, here are the things we need to do:

  1. Custom designing of City specific secured drones, which can easily operate within 5km of range. There should be 2 layers of drone flying heights, Low level will capture and secure ground and higher level secure low flying drones in case of any unfortunate events.
  2. Systems to control and capture the data coming directly through the Drones
  3. Infrastructure to implement AI and IoT technology systems
  4. Implement in phases. A pilot/test run should implement focused upon Transportation of calgary, which will include traffic capture and reporting. This will include running the drone on extreme weather conditions.
  5. Once the test run is successful, the next phase will be to start giving more responsibilities with Transportation activities
IoT will help in capturing all the required data and AI will provide the required information to the City
  6. Once we start getting the planned benefit out of the Transportation, the system will implement on other City services
I am more excited about implementing the same for public & law safety, but that will require more functionalities in the drone like able to flash police or warning lights, a speaker to warn or inform etc.

This is a prototype and not the detailed plan, but I am sure it will give a sense of what I am trying to propose.

Make a reliable and functional alternative transportation system

While Calgary has dedicated significant resources to automobile transportation, any other way to get around our great city is a dismal failure, especially during our long winters. I would like to see a transit system that is dependable, comfortable, and doesn't break down on a daily basis, especially for predictable events, such as weather. I would like to see bicycle lanes that are contiguous and connected, and don't... more »
What will change for Calgarians if we solve this problem? (Measurable)

Calgarian lives will improve with safe, alternative transportation choices. Societally, getting people moving together safely and comfortably will facilitate real life interactions, and reduce our increasingly isolated digital lives. There will be less impacts on the environment from a consumable and output perspective. It will make Calgarians happy, and get them where they need to go. We could also reduce taxes by investing in high return human scaled infrastructure, instead of simply building and maintaining more roads.

How could we make it happen with technology or data? (Attainable)

Technology could provide better, more reliable transit vehicles. We could have a simple app that shows you where your bus or Ctrain is in real time. You could use a map to find gaps within bicycle routes. You could satellite images to determine poor sidewalks, and where snow is inappropriately stored. You could enhance 311 to report sidewalks and bike lanes with immediate feedback. You could heat sidewalks and bus shelters with energy recruited from alternative energy sources. Ultimately, you just need to put some resources into it.
