The seed of this idea comes from city’s mission statement for this project combined with the vision I have for Calgary to grow as a culturally enriched city. Calgary’s core downtown culture lacks “street drama” (description below) and needs more shared spaces that are entrepreneurial and allows citizens to come together, create, develop and share ideas. This idea allows development of inner city culture, downtown core... more »
Challenge Statement: Smart Cities are successful if they serve all citizens including elderly, those that can’t or don’t know how to use technology, and non-English speaking people. Background: I love Smart Cities, using technology, and social media to make my life better. But there are Calgarians and Canadians who can't. Example are the elderly and elderly with a language barrier. I EXPERIENCED this firsthand as a City... more »
I am writing to you today with an idea that has come from several different personal observations. I live in the community of (Winston Heights)Mountview and aside from a few years away, have basically lived here for the majority of my life. I recently renovated and moved into what was my childhood home, in the same community after selling my own home, also in the ‘hood. The community itself is undergoing considerable... more »

It can be customised (so from project to... more »
Our city streets and communities are littered with cigarette butts. They are another form of waste in our society that could be collected, recycled or composted. My idea is to create a cigarette butt recycling program that would encourage citizen to collect and recycle cigarette butts. Terracycle in Toronto already has a program to address this issue, but I think too few people know about it or are willing to ship and... more »
Maybe if they ever decide to put a plus 15 between city hall and the new library they could incorporate the idea of an extended green space or plaza or a performance or eating area. The area on the south side of the Municipal Building is in a sunny area above a long driveway to parking underground. People could then easily use the parking at City Hall and go to the Library by using this plaza then an architecturally... more »
We have plus 15 but the food trucks can't access these areas. The airport has elevator trucks that could be converted to food trucks and then certain suitable spots could be found to serve people on the bridges or plazas from trucks parked below.
Increasing concerns over public sedentary behavior can be disconcerting. With ergonomic workplaces becoming the new norm for the next generation, how do we integrate this new culture of wellness into our community as efficiently as possible? If we create initiatives surrounding the kinds of movements with higher barriers to entry (silly walking), that when engagement does occur the novelty and experience may have the... more »

Bike lanes and the bicycle network of Calgary has become an integral and innovative sector of city transportation. Cultivation of new ideas and investment in better ways of getting around town on a bike has been steadfast as changes in technology (e.g., folding bikes, 700C tires and fenders, E-bikes) and outdoor apparel continue to roll forward. We see from the bike count data obtained from counters at 25 locations (City... more »
The City Light Electricity and App Network (CLEAN) is an initiative that consists of a number of technologies that already exist in some form (in the areas of solar and wind energy; digital sensors; motion-activated street lights, the Smart Grid; EV technology; and mapping apps), but brought together in an innovative way to improve the city in livability, sustainability and community. The idea won the 2015 TechniCity... more »
City of Calgary cTrains and buses should offer free wifi. The amount of morning and afternoon commuters that would be checking work emails would contribute to the economy, it would encourage transit ridership and the City could use the channel to promote things such as transit apps, low income assistance programs, bus pass reminders, etc.
There are several locations along the river in Calgary that would make great spots for urban sand beaches. This would provide Calgarians with a place to access the river and gather during the summer months. Along the Eau Claire River Pathway just to the west of the Peace Bridge and helicoptor pad. This location is high enough to avoid future flooding, but close to the river and in a central location adjacent to downtown... more »
Calgary is blessed with 2 beautiful rivers running right through town. However ,unlike most other cities with similar natural assets, there is almost NO opportunity in Calgary to sit in a cafe, bar or restaurant on the waterfront. If you think about some of the great river cities in the world, they all make much better use of their water front for social and commercial purposes. Think about strolling from pub to pub... more »
