Placing a shelf on the outside of recycling bins (residential and/or public) where empty bottles and cans can be easily accessed by "bottle pickers". This will decrease the need for these individuals to hunt through garbage/recycling bins.
Maybe if they ever decide to put a plus 15 between city hall and the new library they could incorporate the idea of an extended green space or plaza or a performance or eating area. The area on the south side of the Municipal Building is in a sunny area above a long driveway to parking underground. People could then easily use the parking at City Hall and go to the Library by using this plaza then an architecturally... more »
We have plus 15 but the food trucks can't access these areas. The airport has elevator trucks that could be converted to food trucks and then certain suitable spots could be found to serve people on the bridges or plazas from trucks parked below.
Increasing concerns over public sedentary behavior can be disconcerting. With ergonomic workplaces becoming the new norm for the next generation, how do we integrate this new culture of wellness into our community as efficiently as possible? If we create initiatives surrounding the kinds of movements with higher barriers to entry (silly walking), that when engagement does occur the novelty and experience may have the... more »
For the extended buses with the accordian style bending section, have accordian music play when the bus turns corners and the middle bends like an accordian
Light the peace bridge in red and green during the Christmas season.
City of Calgary cTrains and buses should offer free wifi. The amount of morning and afternoon commuters that would be checking work emails would contribute to the economy, it would encourage transit ridership and the City could use the channel to promote things such as transit apps, low income assistance programs, bus pass reminders, etc.
Adding onto my previous submission called Marlborough Plaza, I had a few ideas for a renovation of the existing mall to keep and create jobs also to make and save money. I definitely think the mall needs a day care; this will be perfect for customers to start and hopefully once the condo building is built on top the day care can be used by the tenants possibly by a low cost registration - monthly or annual option. I... more »
There are several locations along the river in Calgary that would make great spots for urban sand beaches. This would provide Calgarians with a place to access the river and gather during the summer months. Along the Eau Claire River Pathway just to the west of the Peace Bridge and helicoptor pad. This location is high enough to avoid future flooding, but close to the river and in a central location adjacent to downtown... more »
Calgary is blessed with 2 beautiful rivers running right through town. However ,unlike most other cities with similar natural assets, there is almost NO opportunity in Calgary to sit in a cafe, bar or restaurant on the waterfront. If you think about some of the great river cities in the world, they all make much better use of their water front for social and commercial purposes. Think about strolling from pub to pub... more »
Update the Plus 15 systems with consideration of universal design to to improve accessibility for all, to help overcome visible and not so visible barriers to accessing the network.
This could take a few different forms. But the core idea is to take advantage of immersive social games tools to encourage people to find poling stations, visit those stations, and generate buzz around visiting them. Games like Pokémon-Go make a profit off using public space for their game-play. Would their developers be willing to help create buzz on election day by positioning better characters, gyms and caches near... more »
Poll workers are connected to the community in as many ways as possible. This might also mean that we need to reconsiders how we decide where your local poling station is - what are the actual hubs in the community these days? Is it the coffee shop, the mall, the dog park? (This idea is submitted on behalf of the participants of a Civic Innovation YYC "Idea Lab" session which used this topic as the focus for the event!... more »
In the United States, the 'Rock the Vote' movement hosts events and creates awareness for upcoming elections, candidates and issues, with the goal of getting people out to the polls. Perhaps we could consider the opposite, a rockin' celebration held after the election, open only to people who cast a vote and received a ticket or unique confirmation number at their polling station. Moreover, the party only happens if... more »
Let's turn the intersection into an all-ways crosswalk. Also called a 'pedestrian scramble' it enables people to cross the intersection in every direction at the same time. What's more, for that brief moment the intersection becomes a plaza that can be 'occupied' until the light changes. To accomplish this, the surfacing could be changed to allow safe passage across the tracks and this opportunity could be used to think... more »
