In China, the government has invested $1 billion on an Artificial Intelligence (AI) research park. AI is going to play an enormous part of our future. My suggestion is to give grants to AI programs offered by colleges, universities, etc... Put some standards in place and allow many colleges to apply for these grants. (standards such as: quality, ethics, hands-on learning etc...) Make sure many colleges/universities are... more »
Calgary when looking to become a smart city needs to look at creating a network that can help us manage city systems and help deliver power and other services to the population. This network would need to be secure and run outside the regular consumer internet network.
While Calgary has dedicated significant resources to automobile transportation, any other way to get around our great city is a dismal failure, especially during our long winters. I would like to see a transit system that is dependable, comfortable, and doesn't break down on a daily basis, especially for predictable events, such as weather. I would like to see bicycle lanes that are contiguous and connected, and don't... more »
Now that Lafarge Canada has moved out of their location at the end of Anderson Rd SE, a simple ramp off Deerfoot Tr. northbound to join the Anderson Rd & Bow Bottom Trail would eliminate the current bottleneck on Deerfoot Rd further north at the Southland exit.
This simple & inexpensive idea would greatly improve traffic flow on Deerfoot every morning rush hour, and make that intersection much safer.
As I am a frequent transit user I have noticed many things about the buses etc. One thing I've noticed more than others is people struggling to open the back door, for one reason or another. My idea is that we change the current back doors to mirror those on the new trains. One button on one of the doors, one simple push and it opens, no holding a handle or waving to a sensor. This will also come with a red light to... more »
I have a product that will generate more financial income for The City of Calgary, especially the transit division and create additional long term employment for Calgarians first, Albertans and the whole of Canadian citizens everywhere there is active transportation system. It is a simple product that only requires less than 20 minutes procedure for installation, requires no batteries nor electricity to work, just install,... more »
The latest technological progress in the area of Augmented Reality (AR) inspired this idea. The idea may not be achievable in the near future or practical for that matter and it doesn't apply to the City of Calgary only. Augmented reality allows overlaying computer graphics and annotations on the real world. Right now, "smart" glasses equipped with AR technology provides this experience. The technology has been used... more »
There is a company that manufactures and sells a gate that is attached to standard snow plows. When this attachment is secured to a standard snow plow, it helps (during plowing) guide the snow away from a driveway or side road -- thereby avoiding the creation of a "wind row". Many videos of this product are demonstrated on You Tube. Here is a name of a company I saw on You Tube: Ironex (Ken Sawchuk)
Read in the Metro News the other day about Trains, or Transit in the Far East about a new innovation in their systems, pleasant scents dispensed into the individual ridership cars to increase rider satisfaction. Due to the current state of affairs, lack of good personal hygiene( a danger to others) and the lack of a public health system as part of the healthcare system that used to exist in Canada for the benefit of... more »
Instead of having to go to the store to buy bus tickets and passes, I think Calgarians should have the option to download the bus pass or tickets to their smartphone.
The bus pass will have an expiration date and automatically expire when the date is reached. The tickets will also have a count down once one is clicked and shown.
Maybe if they ever decide to put a plus 15 between city hall and the new library they could incorporate the idea of an extended green space or plaza or a performance or eating area. The area on the south side of the Municipal Building is in a sunny area above a long driveway to parking underground. People could then easily use the parking at City Hall and go to the Library by using this plaza then an architecturally... more »
We have plus 15 but the food trucks can't access these areas. The airport has elevator trucks that could be converted to food trucks and then certain suitable spots could be found to serve people on the bridges or plazas from trucks parked below.
For the extended buses with the accordian style bending section, have accordian music play when the bus turns corners and the middle bends like an accordian
For major interchanges in Calgary that have a cloverleaf design, the space in between the cloverleaf off and on ramps is wasted space. I suggest that solar panels be inserted into this dead space which can be used to light the immediate surrounding area of that interchange in order to lower energy cost and consumption for the long term.
Replace feeder buses with self driving cars to bring people to their nearest LRT station. Use path finding and realtime request monitoring to automate carpools to make self driving feeder vehicles more efficient. Leverage the high smart phone market penetration and low barrier to entry for mobile and web app development to create a multiplatform ride requesting application. Use built in GPS and location knowledge to... more »
