Invest in AI Education - Start now before it's too late!

In China, the government has invested $1 billion on an Artificial Intelligence (AI) research park. AI is going to play an enormous part of our future. My suggestion is to give grants to AI programs offered by colleges, universities, etc... Put some standards in place and allow many colleges to apply for these grants. (standards such as: quality, ethics, hands-on learning etc...) Make sure many colleges/universities are... more »

"The Ministry of Silly Walking" crosswalk and plus 15 initiative

Increasing concerns over public sedentary behavior can be disconcerting. With ergonomic workplaces becoming the new norm for the next generation, how do we integrate this new culture of wellness into our community as efficiently as possible? If we create initiatives surrounding the kinds of movements with higher barriers to entry (silly walking), that when engagement does occur the novelty and experience may have the... more »

Riverfront life

Calgary is blessed with 2 beautiful rivers running right through town. However ,unlike most other cities with similar natural assets, there is almost NO opportunity in Calgary to sit in a cafe, bar or restaurant on the waterfront. If you think about some of the great river cities in the world, they all make much better use of their water front for social and commercial purposes. Think about strolling from pub to pub... more »

Beet ice and snow before Calgarians erupt

Beet 55 and Zeolite as snow and ice removers are a great innovation I first recall hearing about in the 1990's on a CTV news report about this idea by University of Colorado researchers. I then followed up with my own research on this topic(not applied, but other reports os same). This idea then reverberated in my thinking since that time. Due to the last few years of very unwalkable and slippery streets as senior... more »

Urban Beach

There are several locations along the river in Calgary that would make great spots for urban sand beaches. This would provide Calgarians with a place to access the river and gather during the summer months. Along the Eau Claire River Pathway just to the west of the Peace Bridge and helicoptor pad. This location is high enough to avoid future flooding, but close to the river and in a central location adjacent to downtown... more »

Something Smells Rotten... In Calgary

Read in the Metro News the other day about Trains, or Transit in the Far East about a new innovation in their systems, pleasant scents dispensed into the individual ridership cars to increase rider satisfaction. Due to the current state of affairs, lack of good personal hygiene( a danger to others) and the lack of a public health system as part of the healthcare system that used to exist in Canada for the benefit of... more »

Cigarette Butt Recycling Program

Our city streets and communities are littered with cigarette butts. They are another form of waste in our society that could be collected, recycled or composted. My idea is to create a cigarette butt recycling program that would encourage citizen to collect and recycle cigarette butts. Terracycle in Toronto already has a program to address this issue, but I think too few people know about it or are willing to ship and... more »

Help Snow Plows Avoid Wind Rows

There is a company that manufactures and sells a gate that is attached to standard snow plows. When this attachment is secured to a standard snow plow, it helps (during plowing) guide the snow away from a driveway or side road -- thereby avoiding the creation of a "wind row". Many videos of this product are demonstrated on You Tube. Here is a name of a company I saw on You Tube: Ironex (Ken Sawchuk)

City Light Electricity and App Network (CLEAN)

The City Light Electricity and App Network (CLEAN) is an initiative that consists of a number of technologies that already exist in some form (in the areas of solar and wind energy; digital sensors; motion-activated street lights, the Smart Grid; EV technology; and mapping apps), but brought together in an innovative way to improve the city in livability, sustainability and community. The idea won the 2015 TechniCity... more »

Using Augmented Reality to Reduce Infrastructure Footprint

The latest technological progress in the area of Augmented Reality (AR) inspired this idea. The idea may not be achievable in the near future or practical for that matter and it doesn't apply to the City of Calgary only. Augmented reality allows overlaying computer graphics and annotations on the real world. Right now, "smart" glasses equipped with AR technology provides this experience. The technology has been used... more »

Using recycled plastic lumber instead of treated lumber

We manufacture plastic lumber out of post consumer plastic generated from recycling programs in Alberta. Unlike other recycled products our goal is to utilize less desirable items like plastic bags, Tide containers etc. These items tend to end up in the landfill as there is a very limited market for the product. We have decided to change that we manufacture linear lumber, fence posts and and parking curbs in effort to... more »
